| | Yunagi Loop | Sakamoto Maaya | ] | So I got my wisdom teeth out last friday. It doesn't really hurt. Gave me an anxiety attack. I couldn't sleep at all the night before. And I mean I didn't get any sleep. And when I finally get into the operating room I have a panic attack and start flipping out. The N20 worked pretty well. I woke up in bed. It doesn't hurt, twinges a little. The only things I can eat are applesauce, jello, yogurt, slushie, juice, and i've eaten all of them already and am already wanting real food. So not only can i only eat nothing, I threw it all up too. They made popcorn!!! and all i can do is smell it! Jerks. So now I'm trying to eat some jello and maybe crackers if i ever figure out how to eat them without chewing. I'm not going to be able to play the sax for at least a week. Joy. School started today, and it's kind of odd. I mean, it's nice to be back in school, and it was fun, but i'm not really learning anything... and i can't really practice... so what am i supposed to do? MIDI class is going to be... boring. I answered nearly all the questions on his little prequiz. And got them all right. And the ones i didn't answer I knew what they were once he explained what he was asking. Ummm. And I was the only one who could rattle off a VT IP address, the only one who uses Linux, the command line, or any of that advanced stuff. Wah, I wish I was in courses that I wasn't the one tutoring everyone else. I decided to only take English besides my music classes. Hopefully Dan Grubb will be as amusing of an English teacher as he is a person. He works at the radio station, and is doing graduate work in English. He's insane. Wonderful guy, and a riot, but insane. So besides English, I want to devote myself to practicing. I want to get good and go gigging this summer. Which means I need experience. I need to call Cyrus and get down to Roanoke and hang out with the people who play jazz down there. I don't know how jazz combos will be like, but it would be nice if we could get something closer to a real ensemble. Our quartet last semester was fun, but didn't really go anywhere. Hrm. Oh well. I'm trying to have fun. And I ate pizza today. You can eat it without chewing if you cut it up really small. |

| | Soul Station | Hank Mobley | ] | It's been a while. I just haven't really felt like blogging. DOn't know why.
Sigh, i hate feeling bad. But it happens
School is over. I think i've done really well in my classes.
Break is kind of nice. I get to work in the morning, then play my saxophone and hang out in the rest of the day. Being with my brothers is great, we've been having fun. Not too cranky either.
Had an epiphany the other day. Was transcribing Sonny Rollins off of a song called Newk's Fadeaway, and his chromaticism just struck me. Like "oh, so that's how he gets that sound." I just went whoa. Now I have a key element in bebop that i finally get. And that's really what I am, a bebopper. I went to the Jazz Band concert and listened to the big band. All those guys, they don't play bebop. They play swing, and some of them are pretty good at playing it. But they don't play bop. (Well, Dave and AJ are just amazing, so they don't count). I'm in my own territory. Mine alone. And I'm prepared to work to get there. It is going to be difficult. But I can do it. I'm spending all of break transcribing and practicing.
I just wish I knew how to have a life. I try. I've been hanging out with some people. Trying to at least. I invite a bunch of the music majors to go see Pride and Prejudice, and we get to the Lyric and the movie is not showing that day because of a concert. So much for mad planning skills. I just wish I knew how to either deal with or give up on my friends from hs. I feel like I can't move on, that i'm attached to them to closely. I just want to feel like I can care about people and have them care about me. How do I have a relationship with anyone outside of seeing them in class? I've met some nice enough people this semester. But how do I go from being pleasant during lecture or at the radio station or whenever I see them, to making friends? |

| | Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers - Moanin' | ] | So here's what happened the last two weeks:
Ok, so a few things happened, but nothing really noteworthy or of any real interest. I sort of just did normal things.
My thumb is better. Stitches came out on Thurs, it's just fine, though i'll have a scar.
Thanksgiving is here, and i've got a whole week off. It's nice, since I've been feeling a bit worn out by school and everything. I've got 3 radio shows this week, and am going to be working some at the vetschool. I'm also going to dive right into transcribing my behind off. Getting the sounds and phrases that I know under my fingers.
Kind of scary being 2 years out from this time senior year. It's really weird. Sometimes it seems like it was just yesterday. I miss everyone terribly. But it's hard being out of high school, everyone off being busy. I've tried to keep up, but it's difficult. I've only been able to write one email to Amanda. I say hi on IM sometimes to some friends, but the ones I really want to talk to don't even have IM. (And you're never on Ewin ) Makes me sad . I've made some friends in my classes and at WUVT, but I just keep feeling like I don't know how to play this game, and taht all I want is to have everyone back.
I did get myself a set girlfriends. Yes, 2 of them. Amanda and Meredith grabbed me, decided I needed to be the third person in their relationship. They are such funny little things. Amanda is from New Orleans, and is a physics major. She even works for my dad doing lab work. Meredith is also a physics major, but wants to switch to music. She's on my production staff and plays alto sax in improv class. They make me laugh, crazy girls. The only problem is facebook won't let more than 2 people list each other under "In a Relationship With". I mean, what's up with that, discriminating against polygamous people. Jeez, somebody should sue them.
I do wish I had a girlfriend of the normal type. Hmm.
Oh well.
I did build a huge WUVT logo. I cut it out of a cardboard box, put wax paper over the cutout logo, then put a light inside. It glows rather nicely. Haven't shown it to the enginerds yet, but they'll think it's cool . Show them something shiny and they get the all crazy...
Finally replaced my watch. It fell of on the way to work the day I cut my hand, so I didn't have a chance to go look for it, seeing as I was in the hospital. It lasted me 2.5 years, so it's not a huge loss. Course, I looked, and ended up buying the exact same one i had. It's a nice watch. Timex Expedition. And the price dropped 10 dollars since the last time I bought one. ^_^ I also found Myst IV in the electronics section. It was on sale for $29, and when they rung it up, it was $19! Yay for good deals. The graphics are amazing. I remember playing the first Myst game on my 33 mHz Mac IIvx 9 years ago. Things have come a long way since then.
The Jazz Messengers are the coolest thing on the planet. And I'm serious. I mean it, they have the hippest sound ever.
I do hate going to sleep. But I have to. Grr. |

| | New York Cool|Donald Harris, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham | ] | So at 4:40 yesterday, I cut my thumb open. We were moving old equipment to surplus. I was putting a printer on the shelf, and I jammed my hand between the support and the printer. I went looking for some antiseptic and a bandaid, and one of the vets helped me. So here I am in the surgery room, a little dog getting examined next to me, washing my cut with surgical antiseptic. The nice vet said that it looked pretty bad, and needed stitches. I hate needles. Like, phobia hate. Like, I'm going to do anything to not get them. So getting stitched up wasn't too bad. Ted Harris from church was there, he's a medical student, and interning at the hospital. I got 3 stitches. It doesn't hurt, but I'm not trying to do anything with it, I'm don't want to see if it will hurt.
Did get my math homework done on time. |

| | Thelonious Monk & John Coltrane | Live at the Five Spot | ] | Well, I sort of got better last week. Then got worse.
My coughing got really bad on Sunday/Monday ish. I went in to the doctor on Tuesday, and he gave an antibiotic and a cough suppressant. So all in all, i'm scarfing 14 pills a day. 2 anti cough #1, 6 of anti cough #2, 2 antibiotics, and the 4 i normally take everyday. ONce i got on the meds, i've felt a lot better, but I'm still tired and shut down.
I stopped taking Ambien and I can't fall asleep. I was up for like 2 hours last night trying to fall asleep. Stupid. Skipped theory today. Not only was I late, the bus system is all screwed up again because of ESPN game day deciding that they can just take over the entire Alumni Mall road for their stupid broadcast. So that made me later. So i said bah, and went and pre-recorded the first section of my show, since I am late to that because of work.
I did get interviewed on the way in. The camera man and the reporter lady were talking to some girls who were acting all dumb and screaming. The reporter walked up to me and said "Are you excited about ESPN gameday being here?" i shook my head. "No." "Oh, well, we wanted to talk to people who are excited. But we'll still talk to you anyway. Ready? Ok. Why is it not exciting" "It messes up the whole bus system. And since I have most of my classes in Squires, all the commotion is bothersome. Not that I particularly care about football anyway."
She then asked what year I was, what my name was and how I spelled it.
Ashton might be on national television dissing his school and ESPN! |
